Bookworms, a bookstore app, is a platform designed to provide users with a convenient way of borrowing and purchasing books from different online bookstores. The app is available on both iOS and Android devices, with a clean and intuitive user interface that makes it easy for users to browse and search for their favorite books. One of the most critical aspects of the app is its ability to handle failed transactions effectively and empathetically.
As a UX writer, one of the critical components of my job is to ensure that the app's messaging is clear, concise, and empathetic. In this case study, I will focus on the failed transaction messages and how they are crafted with empathy to help users understand what went wrong and how to resolve the issue.
The primary challenge faced by the bookstore app was handling failed transactions, which often resulted in negative user experiences. Frustrated users would abandon the app and move on to other platforms, leading to a significant loss in revenue. Moreover, the app's reputation was at stake, as users would leave negative feedback, affecting its overall rating and credibility.
Before writing the failed transaction messages, we conducted user research to understand the pain points users experience when using the app. We discovered that some users had issues with the app's payment system, which resulted in failed transactions. Based on this feedback, we decided to craft messages that would empathize with users and help them understand what went wrong.
When a user experiences a failed transaction, we want to ensure that the message they receive is clear and empathetic. We crafted the following messages to help users understand what went wrong and how to resolve the issue:
"Sorry, we were unable to process your payment. Please check your payment details and try again."
This message is displayed when the payment details entered by the user are incorrect. We wanted to ensure that the user understood that the issue was with the payment details they entered, and not the app's fault. The message also suggests a solution to the problem, which is to check their payment details and try again.
"We apologize, but we were unable to complete your transaction at this time. Please try again later."
